The book,, Somerville Through Time, features "then and now" images of the town including a number of interior photos of the Wallace House that show its gradual restoration to the authentic historic site we know today. Linda and Bob will be showcasing their work at the VanHorn House as part of the Heritage Trail Sunday Speaker Series, February 7 at 2 pm. The lectures are open to the public and free. Copies may be purchased there or people can order online: People can order online at <a href="http://www.somervillethroughtime.com/">www.somervillethroughtime.com</a>.<br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">The day intended to honor our commanders in chief, past and present, has been reduced to a three-day weekend best known for its car and mattress sales.<u></u><u></u></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">The holiday that inspired Presidents Day—George Washington’s birthday—was once a national holiday of far greater importance. Each year, Americans honored their first and finest president on his actual birthday, <span class="aBn" data-term="goog_1128610772" style="border-bottom-color: rgb(204, 204, 204); border-bottom-style: dashed; border-bottom-width: 1px; position: relative; top: -2px; z-index: 0;" tabindex="0"><span class="aQJ" style="position: relative; top: 2px; z-index: -1;">Feb. 22</span></span>. We sent George Washington’s Birthday greeting cards, held parades, and participated in events and ceremonies to show respect and gratitude to the man whose courage and fortitude were critical to our nation’s founding.<u></u><u></u></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">In 1968, this tradition changed as Congress passed the Uniform <span class="aBn" data-term="goog_1128610773" style="border-bottom-color: rgb(204, 204, 204); border-bottom-style: dashed; border-bottom-width: 1px; position: relative; top: -2px; z-index: 0;" tabindex="0"><span class="aQJ" style="position: relative; top: 2px; z-index: -1;">Monday</span></span> Holiday Act. This piece of legislation moved the observances of certain holidays, including Washington’s Birthday, along with Columbus Day, and Memorial Day, from meaningful dates to specific Mondays, creating more three-day weekends for federal workers.<u></u><u></u></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">As a result, we no longer dedicate a day to honor the memory of our most important founding father. Instead we mark the third <span class="aBn" data-term="goog_1128610774" style="border-bottom-color: rgb(204, 204, 204); border-bottom-style: dashed; border-bottom-width: 1px; position: relative; top: -2px; z-index: 0;" tabindex="0"><span class="aQJ" style="position: relative; top: 2px; z-index: -1;">Monday</span></span> in February as “Presidents Day.” We lump Washington together with the likes of James K. Polk, Millard Fillmore, Chester A. Arthur, and other men who have held the office, but fail to hold the same place of crucial importance in our American narrative.<u></u><u></u></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Surely George Washington deserves better.<u></u><u></u></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">In light of this, the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association—the non-profit organization that owns and operates Washington’s northern Virginia estate—urges communities around the country to bring back the tradition of remembering and reflecting upon the contributions of the "Father of Our Country."<u></u><u></u></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">And those contributions are many. It was Washington who spent two winters here in Jockey Hollow and led a zealous army to victory in a revolution that seemed unwinnable. Instead of using his glory on the battlefield to advance his personal power, he resigned his commission to return to farm life at Mount Vernon.<u></u><u></u></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">When unanimously elected president, he again answered his country’s call, leaving loved ones and cherished home behind. As president, he acted with careful intent, recognizing that his decisions would establish precedents. Perhaps most significantly, he showed the unparalleled wisdom to step away from seizing absolute power, ever mindful of protecting the Constitution and ensuring the success of this great democratic experiment.<u></u><u></u></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">When his birthday was celebrated as a national holiday, Americans were reminded that this great nation did not just “happen” by chance. They paid homage to a man who risked everything in order to create our great nation.<br />This appreciation of the past is essential to the formation of our future. The Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association passionately believes in the importance of educating our citizens, particularly our children, so that they understand and appreciate our nation’s remarkable founding. In the past year, we have taken significant steps to counter the decline of history education in the classroom by rapidly expanding our digital presence.<u></u><u></u></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">In 2014, we launched the newly redesigned <a href="http://mountvernon.org/" style="color: #1155cc;" target="_blank">mountvernon.org</a>, loaded with interactive features, including an immersive new virtual tour of Mount Vernon that allows visitors to explore George Washington’s home from any location in the world. We also introduced a high-quality digital presentation documenting Washington’s heroics at the Battle of Yorktown.<br />To accomplish each of these endeavors, and to maintain and operate the historic estate itself – as we have for more than 150 years—we rely exclusively on private funds. We are grateful to patriotic Americans in New Jersey who provide generous support. Thank you and we hope others will join us<u></u><u></u></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">We hope that families, teachers, community leaders and concerned citizens in New Jersey will grasp the opportunity to honor George Washington by learning and sharing more about this great man on his actual birthday. Many people will never know that Washington was a deeply textured individual; an entrepreneur who operated the most successful whiskey distillery of his day; a family man who raised step children and grandchildren, loved dogs and a gracious host known for dancing all night.<u></u><u></u></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">If you can’t travel to Washington’s beautiful Virginia estate in person, we invite you to visit <a href="http://mountvernon.org/" style="color: #1155cc;" target="_blank">mountvernon.org</a> and discover something new and surprising about the man we call our greatest founding father.<u></u><u></u></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">George Washington is no mere president, to be jumbled together with Franklin Pierce and James Buchanan. He is the standard bearer, the precedent setter. He is, to use the words of historian James Flexner, the “indispensable man.” Let’s look for a better way to celebrate our most important hero than by scheduling his birthday over a three-day weekend.<u></u><u></u></span></div>

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Carol K called the meeting to order and introduced members
of the Board. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Minutes. </b>Marge S
had previously emailed and mailed the minutes from the 2012 Annual Meeting to
the group and asked that they be approved as sent, the Board having previously
review them in February. Approved to file on voice vote. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Treasurer’s Report. </b>Marguerite
B briefly reported on income and expenses to date, as well as balances
thru Oct 31, 2012 on our investment fund.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>The fourth quarter reports will not be available until after Dec. 31.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The Association spent $3.358.47 this
year.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This included operating funds for
our organization and programs. We also provided support for the site in the
amount of $2,400 in the past year.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The
funds going directly to the Wallace House included purchase of the spit-jack
clock reel for the kitchen fireplace and funds for woodwork in the Wallace
House Kitchen Cabinet Reconstruction from our Preservation Fund. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Funds spent on programs included our
contribution of refreshments to the Five Generals President's DayTour sponsored
by The Heritage Trail Association in February and today’s speaker. The 2013
opening balance of our Investment fund was $5,077.53.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The ending balance as of Oct 31, 2012 was $5,228.21.
The fund has not realized any significant growth in the last year, and
Marguerite proposed that the Board consider switching funds. She will report on
some options at the next Board meeting.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Jane K was absent but sent a membership report. There
were 40 paid members in 2013.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Donations last
year above and beyond dues enabled us to contribute to the “Kitchen Cabinet
Reconstruction”. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Jim K reported briefly on the status of the above project
which is nearing completion. The roof repairs at ODP were completed early last
year.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He announced an ambitious program
of events next year, starting with a Twelfth Night event.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The kitchen cabinets are expected to be
installed by this time.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The annual
holiday event at the sites, this year “Three Days Before Christmas”, Sunday,
Dec 23<span style="font-size: x-small;">rd</span>.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Carol K updated the group about the Board’s plan to design
and seek funding for a website for our organization which will not only
advertise our group but augment the limited information available about the
history of the sites on the NJ Park Service website.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We were not able to apply for NJ Historical
Commission Mini-grant as originally planned because the Commission canceled the
December submission date, due to an excess of grants received to date and the
limited funding pool. The Board will proceed to seek funding from other
sources, or apply in the new fiscal year.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Carol asked Dr. Wroblewski to update the group on the plans
for NJ’s 350 Anniversary year as Mr. Wroblewski is a member of the planning
committee. He provided the sites with two posters about the Anniversary and
announced the following: The kick-off event is being held New Year’s Eve at the
Count Basie Theater and website NJ350.com is already operational.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The themes for the year are: Innovation,
Diversity, Liberty. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">

The houses each served as a headquarters for George Washington (the Wallace House) and his general staff during second Middlebrook encampment - 1778-1789.<br /><br />The tours, which start from the Van Horne House, 941 East Main Street, Bridgewater (across from Patriots Ballpark) are FREE, but space is limited and reservations are required. The five bus tours are scheduled to start on the hour: 10 am, 11 am, noon, 1 pm, and 2 pm. Call (732) 356-8856 for reservations or sign up online.<br /><br />This is a perfect opportunity for a weekend family outing. A visit to these historic sites offers a unique educational experience, for young and old, to learn more about the history of Somerset County.<br /><br />The five houses are: the Van Horne House in Bridgewater, the Wallace House in Somerville, the Van Veghten House in Finderne, the Abraham Staats House in South Bound Brook, and the Vanderveer House in Bedminster. The village of Middlebrook was located just east of the Van Horne House in an area that is now the west end of Bound Brook. During the encampment, General Washington dated all of his dispatches from Middlebrook even though his headquarters was in the Wallace House, five miles away.<br /><br />Sunday, 14 February, 2010<br />10:00 AM - 02:00 PM<br />Cost:FREE<br />Location: <a class="eventDetailLink" href="http://www.scchc.com/events/link/index.php?tID=2&oID=80&lID=6" target="_blank"></a> <a href="http://www.scchc.com/events/rssL.php?lID=6" target="_blank"></a><br />Van Horne House<br />941 Main StreetBridgewater, NJ USA 08805<br />Email:<br /><a class="email" href="mailto:info@heritagetrail.com">info@heritagetrail.com</a><br />Phone: 732-356-8856<br />732-356-8856<br /><br /><br /><a title="Click to see this area on Google Maps" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=40.58971,-74.551849&spn=0.065179,0.187798&z=12&key=ABQIAAAAJ8gOop45hJIU0SLLgxYrZhRUtWsHWbWiieQwzijX5-Z96shYxhQrL3titZykm1Y9h4QR1M7-J3Ovsw&mapclient=jsapi&oi=map_misc&ct=api_logo" target="_blank"></a>The Wallace House and Old Dutch Parsonage Associationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06446656352649319083noreply@blogger.com0
